IUD Insertion
An IUD insertion clinic is offered by Specialist Gynaecologist Dr Nicole Ong very Wednesday from Suite D1 at Holmesglen Private Hospital.
What is an IUD?
The IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small contraceptive device inserted into the uterus.
There are two main types:
- The hormonal IUD, which is a small T-shaped device with a cylinder containing progestin hormone around its stem (e.g., Mirena, Kyleena)
- The copper IUD, which is a small plastic device with copper wrapped around its stem.
How does it work?
- Both copper and hormonal IUDs provide contraception for 5 years.
- Low-maintenance: no need to remember daily doses like the pill.
- Cost-effective: while initial costs are higher, they're cheaper over 5 years.
- Immediate fertility return upon removal, allowing for pregnancy attempts.
- Hormonal IUDs like the Mirena IUD also reduce menstrual bleeding and pain.

Bookings
Please let us know which Wednesday works best for your IUD insertion appointment. Insertions can be scheduled on days 1-7 of your menstrual cycle. You'll need a referral from your GP, the Mirena or Copper IUD and a recent pelvic ultrasound to ensure you have a normal shaped uterus. If you have not had a ultrasound, we can send you a referral.
Referrals can be made by calling 03 9567 9080 or fax to 03 9567 9079 or email driudinsertion@gmail.com
